A discussão é de dois pontos de vista: histórico e formal.
O primeiro considera a ficção como representação de uma resposta para a pós-modernidade, e investiga um confronto entre humanismo e pós-modernismo.
A segunda considera questões de gênero e forma. Dick é um entusiasta mais do que um escritor de ficção científica convencional, de modo que ele explora as convenções do gênero, em vez de obedecê-las. Não que sua versão de FC seja simplesmente lúdica: o choque entre humanismo e pós-modernismo escapa da ficção, a tensão entre realismo e fantasia, endêmica a Ficção Científica, é agravada no caso.
