Em 1998, o Village Voice publicou um ensaio de Jonathan Lethem intitulado "Close Encounters: The Squandered promise of Science Fiction ", que começa com uma história alternativa na qual "Gravity's Rainbow" de Thomas Pynchon era escolhida como Prêmio Nebula de 1973 pela SFWA (Science Fiction Writers of America). Na verdade, embora a obra de Pynchon tenha sido um marco da ficção pós-moderna e de fato nomeado para o prêmio Nebula do mesmo ano, o prêmio foi para "Rendezvous with Rama" de Arthur Charles Clark.
Lethem chamou a este momento "uma lápide marcando a morte da esperança de que a ficção científica estaria prestes a fundir-se com o mainstream."
